Bellevue Fire adds jet skis for water rescues

The Bellevue Fire Department has acquired four jet skis to bolster its water rescue capabilities on Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish. Funded through the Bacon Family Foundation and contributions from nearly 200 local donors, the new equipment aims to expedite emergency responses in the area. Interim Fire Chief Dave Tait underscored the significance of these jet skis, noting that they can help prevent hypothermia in individuals stranded in cold waters. The initiative, termed Operation Water Rescue 425, raised over $700,000 for purchasing the watercraft and training personnel. The Bellevue Fire Foundation is actively fundraising to support the ongoing maintenance of this program. This enhancement reflects a broader trend among regional agencies seeking to improve safety on busy recreational waterways. The jet skis feature flotation platforms and are designed for speed and maneuverability, allowing quicker access to those in distress. Such advancements are crucial for ensuring public safety in a region with high water activity during the summer months.
